Like a mad prophet peering into the future, Bukowski railed against the credit-driven economy and the deadening effects of the nine-to-five lifestyle. Unbelievable as it may seem, Bukowski issued this chilling warning in 1970:
“At this time there are too many people afraid for their jobs, there are too many people buying cars, TV sets, homes, educations on credit. Credit and the eight hour day are great friends of the Establishment. If you must buy things, pay cash, and only buy things of value – no trinkets, no gimmicks. Everything you own must be able to fit inside one suitcase; then your mind might be free.”
Bukowski “realized that a man could work a lifetime and still remain poor”, his wages taken in mindless consumer spending that keeps the great economic beast of the free market alive and well.
- Charles Bukowski, Notes of a Dirty Old Man.

Starvation, unfortunately, didn't improve art. It only hindered it. A man's soul was rooted in his stomach. A man could write much better after eating a steak and drinking a pint of whiskey... The myth of the starving artist was a hoax.

Being used to live with irregular cashflow since more than twenty years,
this crisis won't hurt me at all and i feel certain to survive this one,
not lacking stamina at all!
To survive as an artist takes a lot of backbone and determination and
that fact belongs to all times in the history of man..
We Dutch say: Velen zijn geroepen, slechts weinigen uitverkoren.
Translated it says: Many are called, few are chosen. Which means that
the character of a true Artist must be very strong and confident aiming
for the higher goal, which is certainly NOT money-making, but more on a
technical and spiritual level!
After very hard labor mastership can be attained,
and never without a struggle with oneself!
An Artist life is a hard life, and loads of creativity is needed to find solutions
again and again. An artist life is most furfilling where it comes to becoming aware
of that which is in the inner being, and very intense...
My advice is not too worry too much about World Economic Crisis, when you feel confident
in the fact that existance takes care, the more you are in your grid! Learn to live with
uncertainty, which is hard because one is raised to control life, not knowing its illusive...
Learn to live a magical life, where one masters his own destiny instead of a religious life,
in which all what happens is given to some 'higher' entity.
Religions always took 'The power to master ones life' as a herecy, forgetting that you are responsible for the quality of your life and those who surround you!
Reactions and reflections are very welcome so give it a shot!
